Recognizing how you got into debt
To truly be able to work successfully towards becoming debt free or in little debt, you have to understand how you got into debt in the first place. By recognizing the reason or reasons you got into debt, you will be able to change your spending habits and savings habits ( or lack there of) in order to become a person in little or no debt at all. While we have said in other articles on the debt free site that it is much easier to get into debt than it is to get out of debt – it is not impossible, but it requires dedication and work.
Yes, work and dedication are important and may not sound like much fun, but the outcome of your dedication to becoming debt free will so worth it. People who are in little to no debt and have good credit are stress free and live happier lives all the way around. You too can be this type of person, but first you must be able to recognize how you got into debt in order to create a better way of spending and a better understanding of finances.
Maybe your slide into debt has been a slow, long one. Maybe it has taken you years to get into too much debt. You may be someone who has had too many meals out over the years and paid for these meals with a credit card. Maybe you have bought expensive clothing, taken too many unnecessary trips and basically lived beyond your means. If you once had a lot of good credit, charged a bunch of unnecessary things on credits cards, then you may be just this type of in debt person. Maybe you fell into debt quickly. Maybe you lost your job and have been living on credit. Maybe an illness has impacted your wealth. You may have been divorced and fallen into financial despair.
Whatever the case, you must create a workable plan to get back to being a debt free human being. Before you can make this plan, you have to sort out your needs from your wants. You probably got into debt partly because you let some of your wants conquer your needs making your wants much more important than your actual needs. If you find that your debts are starting to interfere with your basic needs, you are definitely creating too much personal debt for yourself. Think of it this way, you can wear a new outfit; you just can’t buy it from some expensive high end store not on sale every time. You can eat steak; just don’t eat a filet every time.
There are basic needs such as food, housing and clothing – we all need these things, but we do not have to buy the most expensive of each.
In this day and age, there are a few more necessities that most people need like transportation, communication, and health care insurance. But, if you cannot afford it, you do not need the latest BMW, the most extravagant cell phone (if at all), or extra things tacked on to your utilities such as call waiting and pay channels for cable. But you always need access to health care like dependable insurance or a savings that will cover a hospital visit if you don’t carry insurance.
You may be able to get out of debt by adjusting your lifestyle or spending habits only a bit. Some of you can achieve this by only having to make minor cutbacks like eating out at your favorite restaurant less, buying sale items, keeping your car an extra year or so. It is the ability to recognize such things like cutting back vacation time that will help you get out of debt quicker. But, if you are someone who is reading this article, you most likely have bigger debts – the kinds of debts that require more than just small cut-backs in spending. Most likely, you will need to make more major adjustments to your spending than just as shortening your vacation time. You may have to move to a less expensive home. You may have to totally give up a hobby to save money. You may have to switch to a cheaper car.
Recognizing where you really stand in your finances and truly dedicating time and effort to adjust your spending will be the best first step towards becoming less in debt that you can make.
