The Issues
With Joint Debt (part 4)
A Team Effort
When it
comes to fixing or making better any debt situation where it
a joint affair, meaning you are in legal debt with someone
else, it is important to make the recovery process a team
effort. Many people who are in joint debt have children. If
you are part of a couple or partnership that has children,
it can be very difficult to cut out the extra unnecessary
spending unless it is a team effort where everyone involved
is aware of the situation and chips in to support the
recovery efforts. This is not to say that children have to
monetarily help out – they just need to be aware of the
budget and plan you have in place to get debt free or in a
better debt situation. Everyone in your financial family or
partnership has to be willing to work together. If you are
cutting you’re spending only to have those savings spent by
another family member, you will get frustrated and even
resentful if you are saving and they are spending. You
simply will not be able to achieve your debt free goals id
this is the case. All the same, you have to communicate the
household’s actual detailed needs if you want everyone to be
on the same page. For instance, your child is not going to
stop asking for unnecessary things unless they understand
the household plan. This is not to say that your young child
will be able to automatically grasp such issues, but you
need to work towards getting everyone into an agreement.
When you are not the only one responsible or at least
involved in your debt problems, you will never be able to
solve your problems alone.
Worth
noting: It is very vital not to pin blame on any specific
person for the debt problems. If you create a sense of blame
in the house, you will find it very hard to work together as
a team. No matter how you got in trouble, you all have to
work together to fix it – bottom line. If your or your
partner or spouse feels defensive, no good can come out of
your efforts to repair your debt problems or plan to become
debt free. Stick to the facts of where you are currently and
where your budget and plan will take you. Show that you want
to start making some changes for the better in a positive
manner and move one to achieve the goals.
