Credit reports – making yours work for you

The existence of credit reporting agencies in some ways is a nuisance, but if you use them in a positive way as a financial tool, you will be able to know exactly where you stand in the world of credit standing. If you use the information in your report the right way, credit can be a good thing. You must be willing and able to take proactive measures to keep your credit report intact and at its best.

Quite simply, you have to pay all of your bills on time. The best way to make certain you pay your bills on time is to keep your debt load low enough so that you always have the amount due each month and on time. Meaning, the amount you make each month needs to be relative to the amount of money you owe in expenses each month.

Even if you do everything right, you r credit report might still show a negative credit history of some sort. Inaccuracies in your credit report are damaging to your credit obviously. Unfortunately they exist too. Keep a watchful eye on your report and this should not become an issue or if it does, you can take care of it immediately. To make your credit report work for you, you have to be aware of what is being reported to it on a regular basis.

Even though you don’t have much control over the report, you still have rights as far as inaccurate information that is posted on it. You have every right to dispute any errors you find. It is vital that you address these issues immediately when you see them. If there is a credit bureau that reports something amiss on you report, contact them and follow their instructions as to what you specifically need to do to reverse the error. They must investigate the matter within (typically) 30 days. No one is going to tell you when these errors hit your report, you have to find them on your own. The agency does not know it is an error unless you tell them.

While it is not likely that someone else’s credit issues will show on your report, it does happen. This is a mess, but with work you can get the problem fixed. It is vital that you check your credit report for your vital information t see if it is always correct. If your social security number gets mixed up with someone else’s identity, you have a mess. Again, this is rare, but not impossible. If this is happening to you, you may be a victim of identity theft.

So, you have to make your credit report work for you. Be responsible and get a copy of your report on a regular basis. They are easy to obtain and at times free.
