         Debt Tips

Maintaining Your Car

Keep it up; don’t ignore your car’s scheduled needs and warnings

When it comes to living a proper debt free life or when it comes to proper debt planning and management, proper car maintenance is vital. It is always better to spend small amount of your money on properly timed car maintenance than is to have to wave goodbye to your hard earned money when your radiator breaks because you did not keep your car in proper order. Prevent these costly break downs from happening ahead of time. Of course there might be something wrong with your car even if you do everything you are supposed to as far as maintenance is concerned, but this type of thing will be much less likely to ever happen if you take proper care of you car. Get the oil changed when it is needed. Check your fluids. Make sure you get the brakes fixed before you waste the rotors. Be smart. So many drivers out there ignore warning signs until it is either too late or way more costly to fix something than it actually had to be.

Gas

Use the lowest octane gas your car requires. While only 15% of cars require premium gas, 25% of gasoline sold is premium. Never let a little creative advertising by a gas station cause you to actually think your car needs premium gas unless you have a car that REALLY does need it. Chances are, if you are reading this debt free article while driving a car that needs premium gas – you are in over your head anyway. Read your owner’s manual and follow its recommendations.

Tires and tune ups

Like some of the things we mentioned above, tires and tune ups are many times neglected by car drivers. Your tire pressure and ware directly affects your gas mileage too. If you do not get your car its regularly scheduled tune up, you will find that the car will malfunction sooner than later. Again, why not pay the smaller fee to prevent any problems instead of waiting until the car breaks down and costs you 10 times more to fix. Think about towing fees too.

Save mileage

If you work where your neighbor works, why not carpool. If you work at a bigger company, chances are that there are carpools out there.

Filters

Your car has an array of filters – oil filter (usually changed when your oil is), air filters, fuel filters – change them when they need it. Your car’s performance counts on it.

Have a good mechanic

Especially if you have a older car or one that has some age to it, you will want to be certain that you can count on the person who fixes it when needed. Many drivers have no earthly idea what id under their hood. If you are one of these people, be sure you can count on and trust the one who is under the hood.

Rebuilt parts

Many car parts are rebuildable after they break or are used. Say your car needs a new carburetor; see if your mechanic can get a rebuilt one to fix your car with. Rebuilt parts are obviously a lot cheaper than new ones. Not all car parts can be rebuilt, but the ones than can are often times just as good as the part would be if new.
