Frugal does not have to mean cheap
A frugal person enjoys comfort, good food, attractive surroundings, and the finer things in life. Frugal people also many times find a less expensive way of getting theses things that make them happy. This does not mean they are cheap. It means they are thrifty with their hard earned money. Being cheap really means denying any of the pleasures and other good things in life to avoid spending money. Essentially, a frugal person cuts corners at the right time and in the right places to avoid spending more money to attain the same desired goals. See the difference?
People differ tremendously in their wants, needs, and lifestyles. Some people want the finest luxuries in their home but do not need all the extras in their car; others people are more comfortable with a simpler lifestyle around the house but need to go the extra mile on spending when it comes to say a vacation each year. Pick and choose those areas that are the most important to you personally and figure out whether the area you need to spend extra money is in your home, car, vacations or whatever. Be sure to choose the area that gives you more personal satisfaction to spend the extra money on. For instance, if having the best vacation destination is more important than a really nice car to you, then the vacation is what you should spend the most one. That sounds simple enough, but many people who are having debt problems, financial difficulties or are having a hard time achieving their debt free goals tend to have problems choosing. Instead they splurge on all things. Be frugal. You will be surprised to learn just how many good things in life do not really require a bunch of extra spending.
Consider the follow tips to be extremely helpful when trying to live a better debt free or financially more secure lifestyle. When shopping, you will find the following to be very interesting:
- Area rugs and throw rugs instead of wall to wall carpeting create a luxurious yet less is more vibe to most any home.
- Vacation during the non busy off season periods in the year. You will save a lot of money and the crowds will be smaller. You don’t always have to vacation during a major holiday. Instead, take the kids out of school for a few days and save a bit of cash. Stay away from tourist traps.
- Pass down children’s clothing to family and friends. People do this all the time – and not just people struggling with their finances either. All income levels do this. After all, it is smart not cheap.
- When it comes to furniture, refinish and recover. Many times, refinishing a furniture piece saves a bunch of money, keeps the item in the family, saves you from buying another piece of furniture and lets that certain family member keep their favorite chair with an updated look.
- Set up a fitness program on your own that does not necessitate membership in a high priced health club (and the need for extra fitness clothing). Check your community center or your local YMCA to see if they have a great family or singles program.
So, frugal does not have to mean you have to become a cheapskate. Even if you are not having debt issues or debt free lifestyle problems, being smart about your spending habits takes many shapes. So, if you are not reading this website for debt problems, there are other reasons to be frugal. Maybe you are expecting a new baby and you want to save money. Whatever the case, by taking these considerations to heart, you can only win.
