Tips for Reducing Debt
One of the best things you can do for yourself is start paying
off your debt. By keeping too much debt on your books you are
only opening yourself to stress and heartache later. What if you
have a lot of credit and you lose your job? How are you going to
pay it all back? What about going on a vacation? Ever find that
you can’t because you are in too much debt? These are the
problems that everyone faces when they get in over their heads.
But there are a few things you can do in order to reduce the
amount of debt that you have. First you need to make sure that
you never miss a payment on any of your bills. Depending on the
bill this will result not only in a missed payment or late
payment fee, but if it is a credit card they can raise your rate
substantially just for missing one payment. Next you need to pay
a little extra each month to those with the highest interest
rate and get them paid off first.
You should always pay more than your minimum payment. If you
don’t you will find that you are going to be paying more for
that debt than you would have if you had paid it outright. It
will also take you a long time to pay it off. You should talk to
your creditors about lowering your interest rate as well – this
will help. You also want to pay off your credit cards before
your student loans as they have a higher interest rate for the
most part.
And above all else – ask for help. If you don’t know what you
are doing, and perhaps you want a debt consolidation but don’t
know how to get it – ask a professional how. They are more than
willing to help, and there are a lot of them that are free.
