Scams Abound
If something sounds too good to be true the age old adage that it
probably is usually is true. It is the rare occasion that something is
as good as it sounds – and this is particularly true of debt
consolidation and management companies. If they are promising the world
– chances are they cannot deliver it.
With unemployment the highest it has been in 30 years and more and more
people finding themselves unable to make their payments on various
credit cards, etc. you will see multiple offers to reduce your debt, or
cut your payments in half, or be debt free within a year – all geared at
the person who has more debt than they can handle. Unfortunately it is
usually this person who doesn’t understand the ramifications of what
these people are offering.
Debt consolidation, management, and settlement companies can be the best
or the worst thing that happened to you. There are too many of them out
there that are simply looking to either take payments from you and not
pay your bills, or take personal information from you that they can use
to their own benefit. Either way it is a no win situation for you.
Be wary of anyone who says they can reduce your payments by a
significant amount, and check out anyone who asks for money up front.
Anything more than a few dollars a month in fees is really too much for
something that you can actually handle yourself. You can get a debt
consolidation at your local bank, and you can call the companies
yourself to see what can be done about your debt. Do not pay someone for
something that not only can you do yourself, but that they might not do
at all.
