Managing Debt for the Armed Forces
It can be especially difficult for military personnel to know
what to do about their debt. They are usually overseas fighting
while their loved ones are back at home trying to sort out what
they can pay and when they can pay it. It can be very stressful
for those left behind, as well as for those overseas as they
feel helpless to do anything about it. But with the economy
being in such a tough place these days, there are more options
for military personnel than ever before.
For some personnel it is imperative that they handle their debt
as it can impact their ability to add or maintain security
clearances. This can ultimately end up in a dishonorable
discharge depending on the situation. But there are ways of
getting assistance with your debt; you just have to know where
to look. There are military personal finance counselors that can
help you get on a budget and get a debt consolidation if
necessary. There are military aid societies that can help with
refinancing loans or managing your money. They will help you
create and stick to the budget that you make with them, and this
will enable you to get debt free in a much faster period of
time.
If you have creditors harassing you, you need to call them and
explain that you are overseas. If you are unable to call, have
your loved one call for you. You might have to send each of your
creditors a letter letting them know that they have the
authority to speak for you.
