Three Things to Know About Debt Consolidation
There are three things that you need to know about debt consolidation
before you take one out. Once you know these things you can make an
informed decision as to whether or not a debt consolidation is for you,
or if you should look into another route.
The first thing you need to know is what kind of a company you are going
through for your debt consolidation, if you choose to get one. Many
times you can go to a bank and get one on your own, and other times you
may choose to go through a debt consolidation company to have them
handle it. If you choose a company you have to make sure that not only
are they reputable, but that they are not charging you exorbitant fees
to get the job done. If you are paying them a fee to handle your debt
consolidation, you might end up paying more than you would have had you
just left them alone.
You have to make sure that they are a reputable company in that they
have a good reputation. Check with people you know that have used a debt
consolidation company and see if they were happy with the group they
used. Check out the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been
complaints against them. Check out web sites and see if people have
written any thing about them one way or the other.
And finally, you have to know yourself. You have to know your spending
patterns. If you are responsible with your money and know that you are
never going to get yourself in this kind of a mess again, then by all
means get the debt consolidation and pay everything off. But if you are
not responsible, then you are going to want to leave things just as they
are, or pay everything down into one bill and then get rid of all of
your credit cards or you will end up worse off than you are right now.
Once you know these things about debt consolidation and about yourself
proceed accordingly.
