Many individuals do not know their rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This federal law not only outlines consumers’ rights in relation to their credit report, but also outlines specifications for credit reporting agencies. This is a five part series that looks at consumer rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Disputing Information in Your Credit Report:
If your credit report contains information that is inaccurate, and you report it, the credit reporting agency must…
…investigate the information you claim is inaccurate, and then give all the information you supply to the business who supplied them with the disputed information (the furnisher).
…receive the review of the furnisher’s findings about the disputed information.
…send you a written report containing the results of the investigation within 30 days.
…provide you with a new copy of your credit report if the disputed information has been altered or deleted.
…allow you to add a brief statement to your credit file about the disputed information if you do not believe the issue was resolved. ■
