Collection
Agencies Have to Follow Rules
There is nothing worse than having your phone ring and not
wanting to answer it because you know that it is a debt
collector on the other end. Some of these people do not seem to
have a soul of any kind – and although they are “just doing
their jobs” the fault lies really within the company that they
work for. Many of them are told that if they do not collect a
certain amount of money they will be out of a job, and therefore
they are to get that money no matter what. It used to be that
they could threaten you, or holler and scream at you – those
days are thankfully over.
Now the collection agencies have to follow certain rules and
regulations when dealing with your debt and what you owe them.
They cannot curse at you, threaten you, etc. as it is against
the law. The Federal Trade Commission has taken a very hard
stance with these people as they understand that there are many
people out of work who do not have the ability to pay their
bills right now. So they are trying to ensure that those that
are struggling are not abused as well in the process. They say
that the current status of the debt collection rules though are
still too lenient and that they want the consumer to have more
rights and the debt collectors to have less.
The FTC is asking states to pass stronger laws that encourage
consumers to fight back against these debt collection agencies.
They said that it was the second biggest complaint that they got
this past year, right behind identity theft.
