Staying on Track
There are many factors involved in becoming debt free and all of them must be attended to if you are going to get and stay that way. For most people spending money is not really the root of the problem. There is usually some underlying problem that is keeping you from saving instead of spending. Unless you come to terms with that nothing will change.
You have to be aware of your expenses. Keep a notebook of everything you spend and at the end of the day, or the end of the week – you will see all the things that you spend money on that you don’t really need to be purchasing. The most important thing to have is a budget which will show you where your money needs to go instead of where it is going.
You must reduce non-essential expenditures so that you have more money to put towards paying off debt. Initially this will be very tough to do. You are so used to spending money on frivolous things that you don’t realize how hard it is to not spend that money. But if you are ever going to get debt free, you have to stop.
One of the biggest things you can do is get a debt consolidation plan. Once you have all of your smaller debts into one larger and more manageable payment, it will be easier to see where a large portion of your money has to go every month. Credit cards should be destroyed or at least left at home.
If you know that you can’t stop using them, you must get rid of them or you will simply have more debt in addition to that in your debt consolidation loan. They are too much of a temptation. Once couple got rid of all of their credit cards except for their American Express. They know they have to pay it off at the end of the month, so they can’t spend more than they can afford.
But be patient with yourself and don’t let setbacks throw you off completely. Simply hop back on the wagon and continue with your debt free plan. It will work.
