Both Equifax and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that laptops containing consumers’ personal information were stolen. These two incidents are not linked, and the FTC does not believe that the laptop was stolen for the consumer information. But these laptops thefts are just two more in added to the numerous laptop thefts so far this year.
The FTC laptop contained information on 110 individuals, all involved in FTC cases. The personal information the thieves now have access to includes: name, address, Social Security number, and financial data.
The Equifax laptop had the personal information of many more individuals. Almost half of American Equifax employees’ personal information was encrypted on the stolen laptop. This stolen information was similar to the FTC information, names and Social Security numbers of 2,500 employees. ■
