Many consumers throw away their trash without ever thinking about it again. However, you need to start thinking much clearer about where it goes when you are done with it, and then buy a shredder. Scam artists are now digging through your trash to get information on you that they can use to rip you off.
In South Bend, Indiana, police are investigating what they call “dumpster divers”. These ingenious chaps will comb through the dumpsters in search of old credit card receipts that have your credit card number on them. Nowadays most companies only put the last four digits on the receipt, but that does not deter the divers. They’ll just get it from you.
The latest way they get you is to call you from the information on the receipt. They have your name; they just look it up in the phone book. Then they call you and say that you have won some sort of cash prize, but they need you to confirm your credit card that ends in digits XXXX. You give them the info, they rip you off. If you receive a call like this, simply hang up. ■
