Barclays is the UK’s third largest bank today having started the Barclaycard 40 years ago in a converted shoe factory. Not only was Barclaycard the first credit card in the UK, but it is also the biggest. Barclays was the first to bring the concept of the credit card from the US to citizens in Europe.
After five years as the only credit card in the UK, after 1971 other credit card companies realized the potential and began competing cards. Today Barclaycard is one of roughly 1,300 credit card products, but after 40 years, still reigns as number one. ■
