Feds Offer Help
The Federal Trade Commission has started a web site that discusses debt and
how one might get a handle on it. They know that there are many people out
there today who are not going to be able to pay their credit card bill, or
their mortgage payment, or car payment, and they don’t know what to do.
Everyone at some point has some sort of financial crisis, but it seems that
these days there are just more than usual.
But they want you to know that it might feel overwhelming, and it might feel
like you have no one on your side but this is not the case. There are always
options that can be explored no matter how much in debt you are.
They want you to know that you can get credit counseling, budget
preparation, debt consolidation, or bankruptcy in order to help you out.
Depending on your level of debt and how disciplined you are, not all of
these options are going to be right for you. Some of these are just going to
be wrong, but at least one of them will help you on your way to getting debt
free.
The first thing you have to do is sit down and look at all of your debt. You
have to figure out how behind you are in all of it, if there is anything you
can do to drop interest rates or late fees, etc. There are conversations
that should go on with your various lenders first to see if they will help
you and work with you to get you back on the path. If they are not willing
to help, then you have to do what you can, knowing that you can always talk
to someone about a debt settlement or bankruptcy later on.
