Unemployment level rises again

January 4, 2007

According to several state run institutions, upon reporting statistics to the US Government unemployment has risen again. This is not the best news for our debt free news article readers who are need of a new job.

For the third month in a row, the majority of US states are reporting a gain in requests for unemployment benefits fro their citizens. The states that are reporting the highest levels of unemployment are just about the same ones that have been reporting a gain in unemployment compensation in the past quarter. These states include Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina among others. States were the gains are slim to none are California, Florida, Connecticut and others.

While it may be easy for most of our debt free site patrons to understand states like Mississippi and Louisiana still struggling with economic problems stemming from the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, there are some states reporting huge gains in unemployment filing that are less obvious to many debt free advocates.

Other states report new filings due to seasonal changes as well as a slow down in retail following a bust holiday season of spending and adding to massive consumer credit cards debt that is.

January will see a slower rate of employment for retail as it is historically a slow period for consumer shopping. Even though we are reading constant reports about climbing credit card debt and debt consolidation loans, we are too seeing a slowing effect in our economy – which directly affects jobs and the ability to get one.

Many of our debt free lifestyle achievers out there reading this are sadden by this news because many of them are looking for part time jobs to stay on top of new debt and credit card debt they acquired over the past couple of months preparing for the holidays. Statistics clearly show that consumers have acquired a lot of extra debt during this period and we are certainly hoping that these are not all the same people getting the pink slips.

In Mississippi and Louisiana, many of the jobs that were there before Katrina are still not there again simply because the economy ids not supportive of too many new jobs in the area. Tourism is still down and the recent crime wave reentering the city of New Orleans certainly does not advocate a great working environment – meaning not many people want to move back to the area if the crime rate keeps increasing in recent record breaking levels. In North Carolina, the furniture making industry is not necessarily reporting a major slump, but the demand is not as high as it was along with textiles – new jobs are not being created, but some workers are getting the pink slip.

States such as California are still reporting decent levels of employment even though there is a current controversy surrounding illegal immigrant workers in that state. It seems the jobs these illegal citizens are taking are not the ones desired by those legally seeking employment.

Florida is reporting a high level of tourism this winter due to the lack of cold weather. It seems more airline tickets are purchased to travel to the warmer climate making the local economies in the Florida area stimulated – seasonal employees are staying put through January when they would typically be let go due to low traffic in tourism.

While we do see unemployment rates rising in areas where it typically show first such as states with rural blue collar industries, we are seeing economies stimulated in other areas though.
