Debt Reduction Scams
In this time of need for many Americans, there are always those that are
looking to profit off of another’s loss. It is sad, and pathetic for
those that participate in it, but all you can do is be aware of those
that are looking to take you for what you have left. If you are in debt,
there are many options to reduce your debt, or to get a debt
consolidation loan of some kind – but you have to be careful as to who
you get it from.
Working with a credit negotiator can be a good thing if they are a
reputable business. However, many times these people are simply looking
to take your money for doing nothing, or they take your personal
information and use it in another one of their schemes. Before you use
any company to help you settle a debt, reduce a debt, or even get a debt
consolidation, you have to make sure that they are reputable.
Any company that asks you for money up front or any kind of a monthly
fee for doing what they are promising is usually a scam of some sort.
Those that tell you that they are looking to set up a payment plan for
you with your creditors, and all you have to do is pay them and they
will take care of the payments are also subject to suspicion.
Contact your Better Business Bureau before you do anything, and talk to
people who have used a debt consolidation, or reduction, etc. company to
see their experience with them. Do not use anyone that you don’t know
have actually helped someone – and don’t go by the reports on their
websites for they could be made up.
