Settling Debt
If you have credit card debt that you have been unable to
pay on, but think you might have enough to give them
something, or maybe get a debt consolidation loan for a
smaller amount than what you owe on them – you can always
consider a debt settlement with the company. It is quite
common these days for smaller loans and credit cards to be
willing to take what you can give instead of pushing for the
full amount.
They are aware that there are extenuating circumstances with
many people this year and so they are looking many times for
a settlement instead of simply writing the entire amount
off. Many times they are willing to drop the interest rate
so that you are paying less, waiving late payment fees,
reducing your monthly payments, extending the payment
period, or simply reducing the amount that you owe.
If you want to negotiate to get some sort of debt relief,
you should contact them as soon as you know that you are not
going to be able to make your payments. Let them know any
financial hardships that you are currently experiencing,
like job loss or medical emergency, and man times they are
willing to work with you. You should also be prepared to
talk to them about the things you are doing to get back on
the right track again.
Realize that not everyone will be willing to work with you.
Some will be more than willing to help you out, while others
will attempt to hold out for the full amount.
