Debt Consolidation Before Bankruptcy
If you are considering bankruptcy because you have gotten in
over your head financially, hold on to that thought. There
are other options available to you before you take such a
drastic step. One of those options is debt consolidation.
Taking your debts and putting them into a more manageable
plan can change the way you view your debts and your life.
Bankruptcy will get rid of practically all of your debt, if
you are able to discharge it. However, it will be on your
credit report for the next seven years, and there are places
that will ask you about declaring bankruptcy for the rest of
your life. This is not a scenario you want if you can help
it. Instead, look to a debt consolidation first.
Basically you will take all of your smaller debts and put
them into one larger debt – but it will have a smaller
payments. You end up with a lower interest rate than what
you were paying on your credit cards, and you pay for a
longer period of time – which lets you get a smaller, more
manageable monthly payment. Many times this new payment is
more easily afforded and thus the debtor is able to get debt
free in a shorter period of time than if they had left it
all on credit cards.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to make a list of
all of your debts, and how much you pay out each month. Then
you can go see a debt consolidation company, or you can go
straight to your bank. They will show you what options you
have and you can see what your new monthly amount will be.
