Negotiating Away Your Debt

Some people think that whatever amount of debt that they have they have to pay back. In many cases this could mean declaring bankruptcy if you have no way of actually doing that. However, there is another option for consumers, and it involves a little negotiation.

Continuing to pay off your credit cards with their minimum monthly balances will never get you out of debt because the majority of your payment is going to paying off the interest that they are charging you monthly. For some people that amount isn’t even an option to pay and they are looking at ruining their credit scores as they cannot pay.

There is always a debt consolidation option as well – as you can take all of your bills and put them into one loan that will give you a lower interest rate and hence a lower payment each month. But if you know that this will never get you debt free – you need to look into other options.

You can call your creditor and talk to them about your situation. Depending on your payment history with the company, you will often find that they are willing to work with you. This is nice because sometimes they will reduce your interest rate, or postpone payments to help relief the burden. If you are at the point where you are looking at bankruptcy, many times they will reduce the amount that you owe them and set up a payment plan for you to pay back the debt.
