Creditor Harassment
Unfortunately when you get behind in your bills, you bring on a
slew of phone calls and letters from creditors who want you to
pay them whatever it is you owe them. These creditors get paid
by the amount of money that they return to the company, so it is
in their best interest to get you to pay them something. It used
to be that they could threaten their clients, yell at them, etc.
but this is no longer legal under the law. Instead, they can ask
you for the money, but they cannot harass you in any way.
If you don’t like the phone calls and only want to be contacted
via mail, you can send them a letter telling them that and they
have to stop calling you. They can send you a letter, but they
cannot call you or they will be fined for doing so. They also
cannot threaten you at any point with any kind of legal action,
or anything else that they cannot actually do, because they will
be fined for that as well.
But there are other things you can do to get rid of the
creditors; you can get a debt consolidation loan. This loan will
be a lump sum of all of your other debts and will pay off the
ones that you are being harassed about. Now there are other
kinds of debt consolidation that have you continuing to work
with the creditors until you pay them off, but they still do not
have the right to call you or harass you as long as you have an
agreement with them in writing. If they call or harass you they
will find themselves in court.
