Staying out of Debt

For those of you who are concerned about heading into debt, or even if you have debt problems, you can evaluate your current situation and figure out ways to stay away completely from issues with debt, or avoid furthering your problems with debt. As we write this debt free article, we are gearing up for the Holiday Season in the US. Many of you are getting ready to head out to the mall or shop online. First here are some suggestions we recommend – even throughout the entire year.

  • Be certain that you are keeping full track of your monthly or weekly spending. Ask yourself the following questions when doing so. Are you spending within the limits of your budget? Do you even have a budget?
  • Stay away from using any credit cards – especially for purchasing small items. Small payments can and will add up into one large debt sooner than you can imagine.
  • You need to be certain that you have money set aside to cover your credit card payments and pay in full at the end of each month when the bill arrives.
  • The first month that you should fall behind on your payments, you have to change your spending habits at once. Discipline yourself. It is the only way you can get through debt issues. If you do not have the required will power to see through your budget, you will most likely never become debt free or free of any debt problems.
  • Take out loans only for major purchases, such as purchasing an automobile or new home. Make the monthly payment with interest your op priority when you get paid too.
  • Emergencies are when you borrow only. Of course, if you own a home you are borrowing and you most likely have a car loan too. But we are talking about is new debt an unnecessary debts. Do not get a new credit card just to go Holiday shopping with.
  • Create a plan of putting aside money so that you always have some reserve. You will be surprised how much better you will be able to sleep at night knowing you have an emergency fund. It is also another way of NOT having to borrow in an emergency as we stated above.
  • Always make sure that you are comparison shopping or shopping wise. Look for the best deals. Steer clear of impulse buying. This is really hard to do during the Holiday season especially. Stick to the program. DO not get sucked into shopping for unnecessary items and add-ons during any time of year - let alone the Holidays.
  • If you are lacking in the discipline department and you are not the best at handling money properly, have it deposited directly into your banking account. Many people do this for the true convenience of not having to run to the bank and cashing their paychecks, but it is also a way of not handling a lot of cash that you may overspend. Keep in mind, if you have a check card, you do not want to over spend either. However, cash spends quicker than checks and check card purchases. You are more likely to run through cash faster and it is harder to track when spending too.
  • If you do go into debt, never just assume that if you ignore it, it will fade away. This type of spending attitude will get you into a lot of debt problems and fast too. This attitude is also the most frequent reason consumers have to file a bankruptcy of some kind.

Avoid all the stress, head aches, sleepless nights, and harm to your personal life that bad debt can create so often. Even though the Holiday season is upon us now, bad spending can happen year around. If you cannot manage to discipline yourself at any time of the year, you will have problems with debt and you can kiss a debt free lifestyle goodbye. Try to remember how hard it is that you work each day for your money, then apply that hard work towards protecting what you earn by not overspending or creating interest payments that just are not necessary.
